IN LOCAL HISTORY
• 50 YEARS AGO — Ed Granger and his rink of third Nelson Dagg, second Brian Granger and lead Ross Carvey emerged as men’s champions at the Brandon Curling Club by defeating Murray Clark’s foursome in the final.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Bill Myers scored 20 points to lead the Celtics to a 58-50 win over the Sixers in the Brandon Masters Basketball League. Stew Farnell added 14 points for the winners. Jerry Hemmings had 18 for the Sixers.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Craig Davidson scored the game winner at 1:21 of the third period to lift the Miniota Night Hawks to a 4-3 win over the Virden Oil Kings in North Central Hockey League playoff action.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Brett Skinner and the defending NCAA national men’s hockey champion Denver Pioneers are living to fight another day. Skinner, of Brandon, and the Pioneers survived a scare in the Sweet 16 from the Bemidji State Beavers and emerged with a 4-3 overtime victory Saturday at the Mullins Centre on the campus of the University of Massachusetts.
• 10 YEARS AGO — A half-dozen Westman curling teams are in Gimli battling to become the provincial mixed champions. Among the locals in the 16-team field are Mark Anderson from the Riverview Curling Club as well as Killarney’s Don Chatham, Neepawa’s Jerry Chudley, Gladstone’s Jeff Stewart, Dauphin’s Ray Baker and Clearwater’s Bill Thiessen.
