WASAGAMING — The Tamarack golf tournament committee did everything it could to see all the finals determined on the Clear Lake Golf Course.
Mother Nature had other ideas. The third suspension of the day due to thunderstorms Saturday was followed by a downpour strong enough to create small ponds on the greens and fairways. The course staff made the official decision that the track was unplayable for the remainder of the day early in the afternoon.
As a result, all matches besides championship flight finals that had not started were defaulted to the player with a higher seed in qualifying. Matches in progress already — the first group was just a few holes into the back nine — were called at whatever the current score was.
A couple of champions were named as Pam Burneski and Tracy Rutledge opted not to play Sunday. Burneski has to fly home Sunday, and earned the women's title as the top seed.
Trish Jordan is on the winning side of the decision in the women's scramble this year, taking the title with teammate Shari Forsythe-Hohm. Julie Card and Kylie Chubey were the runners-up. The last time such a case occurred was 2015 when Jordan took the default loss in the women's singles final because Kaitlin Troop couldn't play the Sunday.
Jeri Lafleche claimed the junior girls' title as the only unbeaten player in the round robin after two days.
Braxton Kuntz and Jack Taylor will set their alarms early tonight and tee off just after 7 a.m., on Sunday in the junior boys' final. The two are both in a Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour event in Winnipeg Sunday afternoon, and plan to play a fast match if the weather allows it.
The men's title match featuring Chad Cumming and Dustin Dyck is a go. They will most likely follow the champion men's final of Keith Fawcett and Murray Lindenberg and the senior men's final between Glen Parker and Jim Wilson, which are scheduled for 9 a.m.
