MONTREAL – Alex Newhook’s goal 1:40 into overtime propelled the Montreal Canadiens to a thrilling 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night at the Bell Centre.
The Canadiens forced the extra session thanks to the late-game heroics of rookie Ivan Demidov, who tied the game at 17:37 of the third period.
Cole Caufield scored his 10th goal of the season and Juraj Slafkovsky scored his third goal in as many games for the Canadiens (9-3-0), who extended their winning streak to three games.
Nick Suzuki collected two assists to run his point streak to 11 games. It marks the longest point streak of Suzuki’s career as well as the highest active point streak in the NHL.
Samuel Montembeault made 14 saves in his first start since Oct. 23 for the Canadiens.
Drake Batherson and Tim Stutzle ran their personal point streaks to five games with goals for the Senators (6-5-2). Michael Amadio also scored for Ottawa.
Linus Ullmark stopped 23 shots in the losing effort.
The Canadiens had a golden opportunity to extend their 2-1 lead late in the second period when defenceman Lane Hutson was hooked by Stutzle on a breakaway. Hutson was awarded a penalty shot, but his shot was stopped by Ulmark.
Ottawa, instead, would capitalize, courtesy of Amadio, with 11 seconds remaining in the period. The goal was initially waved off because of goaltender interference on Montembeault, but the call was reversed following a successful Senators’ challenge.
TAKEAWAYS
Canadiens: Montreal has scored a power-play goal in three straight games. The Canadiens have five goals on the man-advantage over that span.
Senators: Ottawa gave up the first goal of the game for the 11th time in 13 games this season. The Senators have allowed a league-high 17 goals in the first period.
KEY MOMENT
Already up a goal in the first period, the Canadiens doubled their lead on the power play thanks to a pretty tick-tack-toe passing sequence. Caufield found Suzuki down low, whose spinning no-look pass reached Slafkovsky. Posted at the right side of the Ottawa net, Slafkovsky easily deposited Suzuki’s feed into a yawning cage.
KEY STAT
Caufield continued his dominance against Ottawa, scoring his 11th goal in 15 career games against the Senators. Caufield’s 11 goals and 14 career points against Ottawa are the most he has scored against a single opponent in his career.
UP NEXT
Senators: Visit the Boston Bruins on Thursday.
Canadiens: Host the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.
