Most pet owners see their canine companions as a part of the family. A survey done by Associated Press found that 56 per cent of dog owners buy a gift for their dog for Christmas.
There are many different options out there for pets, and some are admittedly harder to buy for than others. So, what do you buy for the dog that chews everything?
KONG TOYS — The most famous toy made by Kong is simply called “the Kong.” These are very durable rubber chews that can withstand some of the toughest chewers. They are made from a strong, non-toxic and puncture resistant rubber material, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Kong toys are hollow so that they can be stuffed with treats to help keep your dog interested. These toys are also fun for dogs that like to chase balls — and their unusual shapes can make them bounce in different directions!
The company that makes these durable toys also has other produces ranging from plush toys to rope toys, Frisbees and wubbas — and the Kong toys are some of the toughest on the market.
Kong has a great line of toys called Kong Knots Wild Knots, which are one of my personal favourites for dogs that like to destroy their stuffed toys. While they have that “teddy” appearance on the outside, these toys are made with a knotted rope skeleton, making them tougher toys that are a great alternative to stuffies.
BIONIC — This is another one of my favourite tough toy manufacturers. They make a Bionic Bone, as well as a Ball, Urban Stick, Toss-N-Tug and a Stuffer. All of these toys are made from an ultra strong rubber, designed to be both pliable and bouncy. These toys are also designed to float, making them really great water toys for dogs that like to swim.
JW PET — This company carries a line of solid rubber and squeaky rubber toys that are quite tough; their megalast toy line is even tougher. The specific line of toys I wanted to mention was the Hol-ee Roller toy. The Hol-ee Roller is a ball made from a very durable rubber, which is designed to stretch and pull back into shape. This may not be much of a “chew” toy, but it’s an excellent tough toy for dogs that like to tug and fetch.
TIRE BITER — The Tire Biter line is made by Mammoth Pet Products, and these toys are made from a rubber and two-ply nylon. The toys resemble a tire-like material, and some of the most popular chews are shaped like — you guessed it — tires. There are tires of all sizes, some with and some without ropes. There are also balls, bones and even retriever style toys, all made from this ultra tough material.
NYLABONE — While tough rubber toys are often preferred, as they are least likely to damage teeth, not all dogs will chew rubber toys. These chews appeal to dogs that prefer more solid chew toy, and they come in different shapes and textures too.
Nylabone chew toys are made of a tough, durable nylon and are a long-lasting alternative to bones. Not all of the Nylabone products are great for strong chewers, but the Nylabone company carries a line of DuraChews that are great for powerful chewers.
TUFY’S TOYS — These toys aren’t as tough as the above mentioned items, but they are definitely a much more durable stuffed toy than many of the others on the market. They are made with four layers of bonded materials, and are built with seven layers of stitching. These toys are rated for toughness, with the mega series being the toughest. While these may not stand up the really tough chewers, they will outlast many of the tougher stuffed toys out there.
Of course, none of these toys is indestructible. But these are definitely toys that will last a little longer, giving those really tough chewers something they can enjoy for a while.
They are also great options for animal rescues. If you are looking for items to donate to pet rescues this holiday season, these tough toys are great for charities — where toys suffer a lot of wear and tear!
