SIXTY YEARS AGO

One million gallons of beer — Dow ale and Champlain port brands — will be dumped in the Quebec City’s sewage system following the deaths of 16 middle-aged men who died from cardiac troubles. The men had all consumed quantities of beer.

A fire of unknown origin levelled the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Levereault, four and a quarter miles south of Greenway, near Baldur.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

The elementary school at Goodlands will close at the completion of the school term. During the last year, students up to Grade 3 have been taught with nine pupils enrolled. In the next term, the students will attend Waskada and Deloraine schools.

Flooding has begun on the Souris River north of the international border. According to a farmer along the river just north of the border, the Souris Valley flatland is flooded through an area a mile wide and 12 miles up the valley.

FORTY YEARS AGO

A protest is brewing at CFB Shilo following the military’s announcement last week that 53 students attending school at the base will be bused to Brandon schools in September.

Oil prices hit their lowest levels in eight years yesterday, plunging more than a dollar a barrel to less than US$11 on the futures market.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

The city’s expanded 911 service will not only save lives, it will also create jobs. Mayor Rick Borotsik says five emergency operators will be hired, trained and on the job by May when the first phase of E-911 kicks in.

Len Evans is calling for a referendum on the Manitoba Telephone System sale. The Brandon East NDP MLA says the Filmon government has no mandate from taxpayers to divest the Crown-owned utility.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The first step in the minimum wage increase took place today. In December, Labour Minister Nancy Allan announced a two-step increase to the minimum wage — a 35-cent bump to $7.60 April 1, followed by another 40-cent increase to $8 an hour next April. From 2001 to 2005, the provincial government annually increased minimum wage by 25 cents an hour.

Jonathan Asselin, a rider from Alberta, successfully defended his title as the 2005 RBC Challenge horse jumping champion with two clean runs and a different mount at the evening event of the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair. Asselin ran two horses in the RBC jumpoff — Rayona Chiara and Lolita — and took first and third place, respectively, for a combined $7,200 win last night.

TEN YEARS AGO

The Eighth Street bridge should be demolished and replaced with a new pedestrian connection. That is the recommendation coming to Brandon City Council on Monday from the city’s engineering department.

A Liberal candidate who advocated for closing hospitals at a recent Brandon debate said it was all part of a ploy to generate media attention. Brandon West Liberal candidate Billy Moore said Thursday his comments were part of a ruse designed to generate publicity. “What I said (at the debate) was to get publicity in Brandon West,” Moore said. “I cannot stand by what I said … except to thank people for the comments and publicity which I received, which I was looking for. Now, I can talk to them about health care and I’m 100 per cent supportive of health care.”
