SIXTY YEARS AGO

Work on a new building for the faculty of education at Brandon College will begin immediately, announced W.F. McGregor, the chairman of the Brandon College board of directors. Contract for construction has been awarded to Pearson Construction Co. for $792,000. Equipment and furniture will bring the cost of the project to more than $900,000.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Before a crowd of more than 250 people today, Betty Gibson opened a school in Brandon named after her. She took the chance to warn parents not to opt out of their children’s decision-making process. The Betty Gibson School, which is located at 12th Street and Van Horne Avenue, replaces a pair of defunct schools in Brandon’s central area, Park and McLaren.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Since she entered her first science fair as a Grade 1 Linden Lanes student, Jillian Horton has won five gold medals and one silver. Now in Grade 6 at New Era School, Jillian picked up her sixth gold medal for placing first in her category.

Wheat Board Minister Charlie Mayer told a Winnipeg press conference that Prairie farmers will receive a $580-million interim payment from the program for the 1985-86 crop year. The interim payment is the largest payout in the 11-year history of the program, exceeding last year’s total payout of $522 million.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Home-care workers will walk out as planned next week after their union rejected the government’s latest contract offer.

Jim August, a Winnipeg-based consultant, has been hired to help the city-funded Brandon Economic Development Board set its direction for the next five years. He will work with BEDB general manager Don Allan to establish long- term priorities, at a cost of $23,000.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Brandon’s future building blocks include more than 200 new immigrants and a wastewater treatment plant citizens will share with the city’s largest employer, Mayor Dave Burgess said yesterday during his annual State of the City address. The mayor’s lunchtime speech to the Brandon Chamber of Commerce, his last before he seeks re-election and one he denied was a campaign speech, included announcements that Maple Leaf Pork will bring 250 immigrant workers and their families to Brandon next year.

TEN YEARS AGO

After more than 13 years at The Town Centre in downtown Brandon, Remington’s Seafood and Steakhouse will close its doors at the end of May. Ben Hernandez said he and his partner Bob Mazier had a difficult conversation about the future of the restaurant, but ultimately decided to close the 250-seat business that features a dining room, lounge and banquet facility.

Manitoba’s two newest senators took their seats in the upper chamber Tuesday and say their independent status is a big step forward for the much-maligned institution. Sen. Murray Sinclair, a former Manitoba justice and most recently chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and Sen. Raymonde Gagné, former president of the Université de Saint-Boniface, were among seven new senators sworn into office. They are the first of the senators appointed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. All will sit as independents.
