SIXTY YEARS AGO

Parks Supt. Ben Tandy and Ald. Terrance Penton tore down the first section of the city hall wire fence, opening the grounds at the hall to the public. A move to do away with the fence was led in council by Penton.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

April Wine proved tonight, with an attendance of 3,145 at the Keystone Centre, a high-class rock band can attract enough people to make Brandon a regular stop on the cross-Canada rock ’n’ roll circuit.

The Assiniboine River has risen two feet over the last 24-hour period in Brandon, causing some concern and problems for the Burns Food plant located next to the river on the flood plain.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Twenty-four hours after U.S. planes bombed the Libyan capital of Tripoli, Col. Moammar Gadhafi had made no public appearance, nor was his voice heard on the radio.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Some families remained isolated from their homes in MacGregor as residents battled raging floodwaters by reinforcing dikes and digging into roads to divert melting snow. Eight homes housing 16 people were evacuated on the south side of MacGregor.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Explosions rocked an otherwise quiet neighbourhood in Brandon this evening when a fire ignited gasoline and propane tanks in a backyard garage, destroying the structure and damaging the adjacent house. There were no injuries, but the fire caused an estimated $10,000 in damage, Capt. Kevin Groff of the Brandon Fire Department said as firefighters looked over the wreckage. The fire started at about 8:20 p.m. in a garage on the 1000 block of First Street.

Forget the Wheat City. This weekend, Brandon is the Heat City. The temperature soared to a record high yesterday, topping out at 24.8 C in the afternoon, as measured by Environment Canada’s weather station at the Brandon airport. The previous record was 23.9 C, set in 1971.

TEN YEARS AGO

Overage forward Tim McGauley recorded his first career post-season hat trick on Friday to lead the Brandon Wheat Kings back to the Western Hockey League Eastern Conference final. They beat the Moose Jaw Warriors 7-3 in Game 5 of their best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal at Westman Place on Friday to take the series 4-1.

NDP Leader Greg Selinger has revealed days before the Manitoba election that his campaign platform would add tens of millions of dollars to a provincial budget already in the red. Selinger on Friday released his party’s full, costed platform, which includes several big-ticket promises made in recent weeks that weren’t in his government’s mini-budget last month.
