SEVENTY YEARS AGO

Work on the rebuilding of the Manitoba Provincial Exhibition’s sheep and swine building destroyed by fire early in January got underway.

Five hundred thousand gallons of crude oil that spilled into the Assiniboine River near Virden is flowing downstream and threatening contamination of the water supplies at Brandon and Portage la Prairie.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

City streets will finally be returned to usable condition after being dug up all winter while new storm sewers were installed.

Two teenagers appeared before council offering to run the city golf course. Ken Judd and Bob Munday, who have offered to pay the city rental for the course, were asking that their application be considered, along with at least two others, for operating the golf course on Victoria Avenue East.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

It was a cold, wet and wearying Good Friday for about 60 highway and city employees, plus volunteers, who laboured through Thursday night and Friday to hold back the Assiniboine River floodwaters as the crest of the worst flood on record passed through the city.

With new radar equipment unveiled in Brandon yesterday, every individual RCMP constable can catch all the speeders on the road, right from the comfort of the cruiser car with the new pistol-like radar unit that can be mounted or hand-held.

FORTY YEARS AGO

The surge of terrorism anticipated by the U.S. administration after the U.S. bombing of Libya took shape with the killing of three kidnap victims in Lebanon and fire bombs thrown at a U.S. marine posts in Tunisia.

Passengers departing from Winnipeg International Airport are no longer able to wave a final goodbye to family and friends because of tighter security measures. Plastic coverings have been put over glass doors leading to the security check-in area at the airport.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Robert Scully spoke to an assembled cast and crew of Linden Lanes students at Villa Louise before beginning production on a “Heritage Minute” video. The Grade 5 class was selected to star and assist in the production directed by the host of the CBC Television show “Venture.”

Westman Cable TV handed out blueprints of its $3-million fibre optics distribution network to city utilities, and is expected to begin underground installation of the system in June.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The changing face of Brandon is about to change a little more as Maple Leaf Foods welcomes a new wave of workers from overseas. Up to 160 Salvadoran and Chinese immigrants are expected to move to the city this summer.

Vincent Massey High School, in just its second year of competition and the first time faring well against powerhouse Winnipeg schools that dominate the game of wits, captured the provincial “Reach for the Top” championship. Members of the team are Jeff Tompkins, Scott Hayward, Devon McIntyre and Matt Morrissette.

TEN YEARS AGO

A fatal head-on collision between a semi and a pickup truck forced the closure of a large stretch of Highway 10 south of Boissevain on Saturday. Killarney and Boissevain RCMP responded to the crash scene at the entrance to Turtle Mountain Provincial Park at approximately 11:15 a.m. The adult female driver of the pickup truck was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and a male passenger was airlifted to Winnipeg in critical condition. A female passenger in the pickup truck was located deceased at the scene. All three occupants are from Sioux Valley Dakota Nation.
