Manitoba changed governments for the first time this century on Tuesday as voters painted the political landscape a solid hue of Tory blue. Brian Pallister’s Progressive Conservatives routed Premier Greg Selinger and the NDP to put an end to 16 years of orange rule. It also marked the demise of Selinger as party leader.

Winds of change were predicted for Brandon East, and as results rolled in on election night, it was clear the Progressive Conservatives would end the NDP’s reign in one fell swoop. Residents voted in favour of Tory candidate Len Isleifson, ousting Drew Caldwell from the seat he has held since 1999 — and ending nearly half a century of NDP power.

A Tory pillar in Westman was bolstered in commanding fashion Tuesday night. The residents of Brandon West returned Progressive Conservative candidate Reg Helwer to Winnipeg with a powerful mandate. As of press time, Helwer took 67.9 per cent of the vote.
