A $500,000 expansion that will double potato storage facilities at the Carnation Foods Ltd. plant in Carberry was announced by J.R. Simplot, whose company owns 50 per cent of the plant.

The only major musical production being staged by a Brandon high school this year is Vincent Massey’s “Oliver!” Students David Robertson and Michael Allen will share the role of Oliver with Rob McKenzie and Brian Cottom as Fagin, Geoff Hicks and Jeff Hirschfield as Dodger, Karen Crocker and Sherry Begus as Nancy, and Craig Dunn and Scott Lamont as Sikes.

The Brandon Gymnastics Centre appears one step closer to building a new gymnasium complex, as city council agreed to sell the group a parcel of land for $1. The non-profit group intends to build a $250,000 gym on the property located in a residential area at 1030 22nd St.

Home-care clients, nurses and striking home-care attendants stood shoulder to shoulder in front of the Manitoba legislature in the largest protest since a strike of unionized attendants began last week.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Corrie Bercier, a triathlete-in-training, spent her birthday at the Canada Games Sportsplex pool, swimming lap after lap to raise money for people suffering from arthritis. Bercier was joined by 10 other swimmers in Brandon and hundreds of others across the country in the first of what the Arthritis Society of Canada hopes will become an annual event. The Big Swim was put on by the Foresters service organization in more than 125 pools across Canada.
TEN YEARS AGO
John Quenneville scored his second goal of the game two minutes 53 seconds into overtime to lift the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 4-3 victory over the Red Deer Rebels in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final at Westman Place on Friday.
A young Brandonite made quite the impression with his result on an international math exam last month. Ten-year-old Walker Stie won the Brandon regional first place prize and was awarded a national gold medal after he finished tied for 38th out of almost 600 Canadian Grade 5 contestants on the Math Kangaroo Contest. Stie scored 117, while the Canadian average for his age was 73.16.
A Brandon Police Service media release helped lead to the arrests of two suspects wanted in connection with credit card fraud that bilked more than $28,000 from Brandon businesses. BPS Sgt. Bill Brown credited Brandon police officers and alert business staff for the arrests, in particular a hotel clerk in Saskatoon.
