SEVENTY YEARS AGO

The first outstanding business donation to the Brandon General Hospital Building Fund — a pledge for $1,000 from Lindenberg Bros. Ltd. — was announced today by Charles K. Bell, general chairman of the appeal for a capital fund of $1,454,000.

Life membership in the Brandon Kinsmen Club was presented to F.O. Meighen, a past-president of the club, by J.B. Craig, also a past-president and life member.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

Authorities suspect a burned-out axle caused the derailment of part of a westbound CPR freight train early this morning. Twenty-two freight cars jumped the CPR main line near the centre of the village of MacGregor and plugged the rail yard with wreckage.

Canada’s 1967 centennial coinage will bear images of wildlife by a Canadian artist depicting various aspects of the country.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

From 8 a.m. yesterday to 8 a.m. today, the Assiniboine River at the water treatment plant in Brandon dropped four inches. The Souris River dropped five inches at Souris and Plum Creek at Highway 2 has gone down 1.13 feet.

Julia Orchard, a Fairview Home resident who says life at 90 is still a barrel of fun, has donated $110,000 to give Fairview a solarium.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Excavators who opened a mysterious vault linked to gangster Al Capone, ended the months-long, million-dollar romantic adventure on live television, hosted by Geraldo Rivera, without finding any significant relics of the famed mobster.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Farmers along the Souris River are benefiting from construction of the Rafferty and Alameda dams, says the chairman of the Souris Valley Water Commission. Wayne Drummond says the dams are holding back water so that the impact of this spring’s flood will be much smaller than prior to the dams being built.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A lot of people talk the green talk, but Gareth and Linda Boys walk the green walk. For the past six years, the couple has lived in a rural home north of Rapid City that draws no electricity from the power grid and uses no natural gas to heat. The Boys’ house is energy self-sufficient. They use solar panels and wind turbines to generate electricity, and they heat their home with a wood stove. The result is a dramatic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, not to mention the complete absence of hydro and gas bills each month. The couple put their energy system on display during Earth Day celebrations at Brandon University, and it was a hit among the eco-friendly crowd.

TEN YEARS AGO

A man was found lying in the street after allegedly being assaulted by a group in Brentwood Trailer Court. Just before midnight on Thursday, police received several calls about a fight in the trailer court. Police were told a man was stabbed by several other people. When police arrived on scene, they found a man lying in the street with several stab and slash wounds to his upper body and head.

One of Australia’s elite volleyball prospects is coming to the Wheat City. Elliott Viles, an 18-year-old from Adelaide, Australia, has committed to join the Brandon University Bobcats men’s volleyball team next season.
