SIXTY YEARS AGO

Dr. G.T. McNeill, with a ecord of 27 years in private practice at Carberry and Treherne, has been named the new medical health officer for Brandon, succeeding Dr. Michael Kozakiewicz.

Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium will have its own nostalgic bit of the past, surrounded with an aura of glamour. A four-globe lighting fixture from New York’s Metropolitan Opera House, an original from the days of gas jets converted to electricity, will be given an honorary place in the auditorium’s foyer.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Thousands of geese and wild swans have gathered on flooded farmland between Alexander and Souris on Highway 250. Souris farmer Keith Davison says the waterfowl gather each year in this area, but the size of the flock is increasing.

Watt’s Men’s Wear, at 821 Princess Ave., has been awarded a contract to provide the city with $19,395.48 worth of tunics, trousers, caps, shirts and ties. Gallenkamp Shoes of Brandon will provide $1,260 worth of boots to the city, and Bill Gray Tailors will provide 27 parkas for a total of $1,105.11.

FORTY YEARS AGO

The grand opening of Huggy’s Lounge in Thunderbird Bowl at 10th Street and Princess Avenue took place today.

Striking nurses started back to work at the Hillcrest Place nursing home yesterday after ratifying a tentative deal worked out between their union and management in Brandon.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

The highlight of the Rotary Club of Brandon’s 75th anniversary dinner at the Royal Oak Inn was a donation from the club of $75,000 to the 1997 Canada Games.

Carberry’s fundraising for an interpretive centre at Spruce Woods Provincial Park is progressing well and construction should begin in September.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The stakes have just been raised in the bid to build a casino in Westman, and the question of where it goes could dominate Brandon’s upcoming civic election. Sioux Valley Dakota Nation upped the ante yesterday after Chief Ken Whitecloud met with Brandon Mayor Dave Burgess to reopen the idea of building a casino in the city. “We are definitely exploring (the) idea of a casino … in Westman, Sioux Valley or Brandon,” said Whitecloud, who took over the position after a band election in March.

It’s an announcement hat many people have been waiting for — and it should thrill those who fell in love with the “Lady” over the years. The full version of the popular and funky Lady of the Lake shop and café is coming back after a devastating fire a year ago that destroyed the operation on Park Avenue. The new Lady of the Lake, tentatively set to open Oct. 1, will be located on 17th Street North on the east side of the 18th Street bridge.

TEN YEARS AGO

An ecstatic Len Isleifson is still letting his historic Brandon East win sink in a week after the provincial election, and admits there will be a steep learning curve as he gets acquainted with his new role. Both Isleifson and re-elected Brandon West MLA Reg Helwer took a seat around the enormous caucus table on Wednesday, joining premier-designate Brian Pallister and 37 other members of the Progressive Conservative caucus.

The man who brought you the Miracle Brush, the Veg-o-matic and millions of albums containing Country Hits or Hooked on Classics died Wednesday. Philip Kives was 87. Born on a Jewish colony farm near Oungre, Sask., on Feb. 12, 1929, Kives came to Winnipeg in 1962 to create the company that bore the first letter of his last name, K-tel.
