SIXTY YEARS AGO
The oldest new store in Brandon will be officially opened today by Deputy Mayor A.D. (Tony) Burneski. The new Watt’s Men’s Wear is located at 808 Princess Ave., opposite city hall, the premises occupied until recently by Lindenberg Seeds Ltd. Watt’s Men’s Wear has been a landmark on Princess and a respected member of the Brandon business community for 47 years.
A $100,000 expansion of facilities at the Public Cold Storage Ltd. plant in Brandon was announced by Norman S. Bergman, general manager of the four-year-old firm. The expansion will increase the plant’s capacity for handling frozen food products by one million pounds per month.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Brandon General Hospital has failed in its bid to purchase Hillcrest Place, a 100-bed personal care home on 26th Street.
Brandon’s Chalet Inn Motel on the Trans-Canada Highway north of the city expects to have its new restaurant and swimming pool open by June 1, according to manager Raymond Relf. The restaurant will include a fast-food takeout service as well as sit-in service for 40. Downtown’s Kokonas restaurant will operate the restaurant as a second outlet.

Leading members of Brandon’s economic sector — and the mayor — are “irresponsible” if they continue to back existing plans for a multimillion-dollar horse park as the project’s success hinges on banks of VLTs, Lotteries Minister Scott Smith says.
It’s third time lucky for the RM of Park and the residents of the town of Onanole who have been given the green light for phase one of a $17.5-million water and sewer system project. “Today we take a giant step,” said RM of Park Coun. Vern Jordan, who made the announcement yesterday at the Elkhorn Resort, Spa and Conference Centre north of Onanole. “We’re moving forward on Phase 1. We hope to break earth in (2007).”

Birdtail Sioux First Nation’s chief and council are celebrating an economic victory that has been more than 10 years in the making. Last Friday, 10 acres of land in the heart of Foxwarren was officially set aside as an urban reserve following a decade-long addition to reserve (ATR) process with Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada.
The Brandon Wheat Kings will look to close out a playoff series in their first opportunity for the 15th time in a row as they face the Red Deer Rebels tonight at Westman Place. But they sure don’t expect it to be easy. Brandon leads the best-of-seven Eastern Conference final 3-1 after a 4-2 victory on Wednesday at the Enmax Centrium in Red Deer.
