Del Howell, superintendent of the Turtle Mountain school division for the past seven years, has resigned. He plans to teach at Killarney Collegiate next year.
FORTY YEARS AGO
City council approved the final reading of a motion calling for a 35 per cent increase in water and sewer charges. Brandon residents will now pay $1.74 for the first 5,000 cubic feet of water, up from $1.24. Sewer rates will go from 42 cents for the first 5,000 cubic feet to 51 cents.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
The Brandon Sun will be taking its first steps toward involvement with the Internet computer system next month. In May, the Sun will begin selling access to the Internet to its daily subscribers.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Two out of every three Manitoba Progressive Conservatives believe Hugh McFadyen, a 39-year-old former lawyer and political organizer, is the man who can deliver their party victory in the next election. McFadyen triumphed with a resounding first-ballot victory over rivals Ron Schuler and Ken Waddell, as the Fort Whyte MLA received 66.6 per cent support from the 9,143 Tories who cast ballots across the province.
The Keystone Centre was invaded by elephants, acrobats and thousands of kids yesterday when the Shrine Circus came to town for two shows. Young spectators made up most of the crowd at the matinée show. They marvelled at the high-flying trapeze artists, comical clowns and the grand finale — Zaal the Human Cannonball.
TEN YEARS AGO
Nolan Patrick has led the Brandon Wheat Kings back to the Western Hockey League final. The 17-year-old winger from Winnipeg scored his second career hat trick and added two assists as the Wheat Kings beat the Red Deer Rebels 5-2 at Westman Place on Friday and won the Eastern Conference crown for the second year in a row. The Wheat Kings beat the Rebels, who will host the Memorial Cup next month, 4-1 in the best-of-seven conference final. The championship series begins at Westman Place next Friday against the Seattle Thunderbirds after the Western Conference champs eliminated the Kelowna Rockets 4-0.
Brandonites will see a 40 per cent hike on their water bills over the next three years. On Friday, the Public Utilities Board released the new water and wastewater rates for 2016, 2017 and 2018. Beginning July 1, the combined rates will increase from $2.34 to $2.65 per cubic metre (for domestic customers), a 13.2 per cent increase.
