SEVENTY YEARS AGO
Capt. James Munroe of the Brandon fire department has been appointed chief instructor for civil defence firefighting schools in rural Manitoba. His first session is scheduled for Virden.
Mickey Mantle hit his 46th home run of the season against the Kansas City Athletics and tied Joe Dimaggio’s best record for home run production in one year. Dimaggio hit 46 in 1937. Only Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig among Yankee players have hit more homers in one season than Mantle.
SIXTY YEARS AGO
Bonnie Maxine MacKay of Brandon won three awards at the 73rd annual graduation exercises of the Brandon General Hospital school of nursing held last night in St. Paul’s United Church.
For the first time, two women have been named to Manitoba’s wage board. They are Donalda MacDougall and Margaret Sykes.
Marking its silver anniversary, the Brandon Community Chest will begin its canvass in October to raise $72,150 to provide funds for the 12 agencies which it serves.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Gas prices at many major service stations in Brandon increased by almost five cents a gallon this morning, raising the average price to about 83 cents a gallon.
Parks Canada has announced a four-year delay in completion of a 55-kilometre parkway in Riding Mountain National Park, 97 kilometres north of Brandon. The first 16 kilometres already have been paved and landscaped, and 13 more have been graded and will be gravelled by the end of 1976. The entire project, however, is not expected to be completed until 1982.
FORTY YEARS AGO
About 12 hectares of barley went up in smoke after a 1965 Massey-Ferguson model combine owned by Walter Moncauskas caught fire on a field about one kilometre south of Richmond Avenue on 26th Street.
Neither rain, nor snow, nor Canada Post cutbacks will keep the mail from arriving in Ninga. Residents of the western Manitoba village have won their fight to retain regular mail service.

The 15-year marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales ended today. Diana was no longer Her Royal Highness, but she instantly became one of the world’s most eligible women.
A robber wearing a clown’s wig held up the Vanguard Credit Union in McAuley this morning and ended up forcing the evacuation of much of the small community.
The government is cautioning people to not swim or drink the water in two southwestern Manitoba lakes — Killarney Lake and Pelican Lake. Blue-green algae can produce toxins that are harmful to the liver and central nervous system.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
About 60 members of the 1st Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (1RCHA) arrived back at CFB Shilo by bus early this week from their tour in Afghanistan. Another 20 or so were picked up by family members directly from Winnipeg, where their plane landed. Another group of soldiers from CFB Shilo is set to arrive back in Manitoba at the end of the week.
People in Forrest are worried about a longtime resident who has been missing for more than a week. Grant J. Moffat, 55, disappeared under what the RCMP describe as suspicious circumstances. Neighbours said yesterday they last saw Moffat on Aug. 18, when he told them he was leaving town for a short time to do some writing and photography.
TEN YEARS AGO
The Conservative MP for Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa says China needs to quit “playing games” with Canadian canola producers. Robert Sopuck says his riding represents the largest canola-growing electoral district in Canada and producers’ livelihoods are being threatened by China’s concerns about dockage in rapeseed shipments.
