SIXTY YEARS AGO
The gift-bequest made by the late Dr. A.E. McKenzie of his residence at 436 Victoria Ave. for use as a public art gallery received unanimous formal acceptance from the Allied Arts Council.
For the first time in more than 20 years, Royal American Shows will not be providing the midway at the 1967 Provincial Centennial Exhibition. The exhibition board announced that the William T. Collins Shows, a Minneapolis-based midway and the largest motorized midway in the United States, will be supplying the thrills, chills and spills at the 1967 exhibition.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
The overall regional winner of the Manitoba Summer Games at Neepawa was Westman, the host area. Westman finished first in five of the 11 activities, leaving the other six events to be split among the other 12 regions.
The Country Kitchen restaurant at 201 18th St. North is now open for business. The owner-manager is Larry Bjornson, and Jim Tait and Dan Brown are managers.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Nearly 600 Manitoba hog producers either dropped out of the industry or went bankrupt during the first six months of 1986 as the industry crumbled under the long-term effects of low prices, the chairman of the Manitoba Hog Producers’ Marketing Board says.
Former Brandon alderman Ron Cayer has announced his intention to seek election in Victoria ward this October. Progressive Conservative Jim McCrae held the seat until stepping down to represent Brandon West in the Manitoba legislature earlier this year.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Confident that a tri-level government financing deal can be arranged to build a pedestrian bridge spanning the Assiniboine River, city officials have decided to begin the tendering process for the yet-to-be-approved structure.
Plans to build a 57-unit motel on land previously occupied by mobile homes are moving ahead slowly but surely, with next July being the target date for its opening. Phil Hall, owner of the Brentwood Trailer Court located on the southern edge of the city limits, said the foundation for the motel could be in place before winter sets in so that major construction can take place next spring.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
A documentary about a Brandon resident who gained fame by promoting prize fights between hockey enforcers has been nominated for a Gemini Award. “Hockey Brawl: Battle on Thin Ice,” tells the story of Darryl (Beef) Wolski as he tried to bring the controversial fights to arenas across North America, battling regulators and public outcry along the way.
TEN YEARS AGO
Rain and hail over the weekend slowed harvest in some areas of Westman in what has been a productive season to date. In the southwest region of Manitoba’s Crop Report, harvest of barley and oats is estimated at 50 per cent complete. Barley producers reported good yields with grain quality impacted by fusarium head blight in some areas. The majority of the region received some rain with an average between five to 15 millimetres. However, the Killarney area reported up to 40 mm of rain Sunday evening. Other areas, including east of Boissevain, got hail.
Gene Wilder, the frizzy-haired actor who brought his deft comedic touch to unforgettable roles in “The Producers,” “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and “Young Frankenstein,” has died. He was 83.
