Final arrangements for an ambulance telephone service between Riverdale Hospital and the Rivers fire department were approved at the recent meeting of the Riverdale hospital board.
One of western Manitoba’s best-liked sportsmen will leave Brandon next week to take up a new position in the United States. Henry Stothard, sports director of CKX-TV, is leaving the Wheat City to occupy a similar position with station WTVO in Rockford, Ill.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Longtime Brandon resident and businessman Karl Yaegar died last night. He was 67.
It has been estimated by provincial environmental experts that 75 per cent of Brandon’s service stations have leaks in their storage tanks.

TWENTY YEARS AGO
Brandon taxpayers must foot their own ambulance bills for emergency service to Winnipeg where certain experts live, but that policy “has to be fixed,” says a provincial government spokesman, to make the system more “fair.” Brandon mom Vicki Rockley recently received an $808 ambulance bill after her seven-year-old daughter required emergency surgery by an ear-nose-throat surgeon in Winnipeg earlier this month. Although she knew she’d be responsible for the cost of the ambulance, Rockley told the Brandon Sun she did not expect it to be anywhere near $800.
City council voted to create a task force of citizens to help police deal with organized crime and community safety in general. Councillors put their differences of opinion about the severity of Brandon’s street gang problem aside and voted unanimously to create a “task force on community safety” that would see citizens’ groups help police in their duties. Coun. Errol Black (Riverview) amended the original motion to change the task force’s mandate to include more than just organized crime.
TEN YEARS AGO
Westman producers aren’t apologizing for the higher cost of hay as a result of a drought in Western Canada, mainly Alberta and parts of Saskatchewan, that has resulted in a hay shortage. Arney Eissner farms west of Souris and estimates he’ll sell between 2,000 and 2,500 medium-sized square bales this year.
The Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex has been awarded the Field of Dreams grant from the Jays Care Foundation, the charitable arm of the Toronto Blue Jays. The committee announced the grant of $123,733 on Thursday morning.
