FIFTY YEARS AGO
Three Chilean families are expected to arrive in Brandon this week under the federal government’s current Chilean refugee movement.
The Manitoba government’s pharmacare program will be expanded Jan. 1 to include virtually all drugs prescribed by doctors and dentists. Under the program, the province reimburses 80 per cent of the cost of prescription drugs in excess of $50 during each calendar year.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Burns Meats Ltd. is still having trouble getting enough slaughter cattle for its Brandon plant. The plant is operating at about 75 per cent capacity because it can’t get enough heavier-type cattle to satisfy its requirements.

TWENTY YEARS AGO
Paul Martin’s proposed handgun ban was shot to pieces at a gun show in Brandon yesterday, where firearm enthusiasts described the plan as an impractical political ploy that could backfire on the Liberals.
An imposing metal tower is the latest surprise to greet south-end Brandon residents, several of whom say the city never consults or even informs them about changes to their neighbourhood. Residents said they were surprised to find crews installing the nearly three-storey high tower at the intersection of Ninth Street and Aberdeen Avenue. City engineer Ted Snure said the tower will be used to relay information between the sewer pumping station at the intersection and the city’s main sewer station.
TEN YEARS AGO
Drilling activity in Manitoba has been cut in half in 2015 compared to the previous year as a result of slumping oil prices. Through the first 11 months of 2015, there have been 195 wells drilled in the province, according to a government spokesman in the Mineral Resources Department. In 2014, 463 holes were punched, while 530 wells were drilled in 2013.
Opposition Leader Brian Pallister said he would not privatize liquor sales if he wins the provincial election April 19. The Progressive Conservative leader, whose party is well ahead in recent opinion polls, said he can rule out any further private involvement in liquor distribution because he has far more important priorities.
