TWENTY YEARS AGO

The Brandon School Division plans to eliminate separate classrooms for special-needs students next year, but some parents say the move is based on a misunderstanding of the law. BSD spokeswoman Amanda Holodryga confirmed that schools in Brandon will no longer offer learning-assisted classrooms, starting in September 2006. The move comes in response to a piece of provincial legislation known as Bill 13, which Holodryga said requires the BSD to get rid of the special classrooms.

TEN YEARS AGO

A man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a Manitoba teenager whose fate galvanized calls for an inquiry into missing and murdered Aboriginal girls and women. Tina Fontaine was just 15 years old when her body, wrapped in a bag, was found in the Red River in August 2014. She was supposed to have been in a group or foster home in Winnipeg, but she had run away. Her family expressed relief after learning of Raymond Joseph Cormier’s arrest.

There’s a saying in gambling that the house always wins. But, that’s not the case for Sand Hills Casino in the first nine months of its operation, according to its audited financial statements. Despite taking in $8.9 million in gaming and other revenue, once expenses were deducted the casino lost $1.3 million.
