Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation has approved a $1,148,044 loan to the Manitoba Housing and Renewal Corporation to provide for the building of three four-bedroom, 10 three-bedroom and 16 two-bedroom housing units in Brandon. The units are to be built on Westaway Bay by Jacobson and Greiner Limited.

The union representing Brandon Eaton’s workers has filed charges of unfair labour practices against the company and is demanding $5 million in compensation.

The generosity of southwestern Manitobans will put dinner on the plates of up to 1,800 area families this Christmas. Contributions to the Brandon Westman Christmas Cheer Registry hit the $60,000 mark yesterday.
The city is owed approximately $280,000 in assorted fees this year, but a good chunk of that debt has been written off. As a result of passing its annual write-off bylaw, city council said goodbye to more than $150,000 in charges, including outstanding ambulance fees, business taxes and landfill accounts.

RM of Whitehead Reeve Wayne Dobbie says the Kemnay underpass is a disaster waiting to happen. Two semi-trailers in two days — one of them hauling dangerous goods — hit the structure that hangs over Highway 1A, about 12 kilometres west of Brandon.

An animated short film featuring the music of a Brandon University graduate is hitting all the right notes with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Julian Beutel was the composer and musical director for filmmaker Seth Boyden’s “An Object at Rest,” one of 10 entries shortlisted for the Academy Award in the category of best animated short film.
Pitchers and catchers don’t report to Major League Baseball spring training camps until mid-February, but a young collection of them will be at the Atlanta Braves’ facility in Orlando, Fla., later this month. Forty players who are trying out for Manitoba’s 2017 Canada Summer Games team, including several from Westman, will be flying down to central Florida later this week to participate in the ESPN Disney Classic, which runs from Dec. 30 to Jan. 2.
