At the regular council meeting in Hamiota, council learned that of 18 rabid skunk heads received at the Hull, Que., laboratories, 10 came from the Isabella-Beulah-Crandall area.
J.S. Quinn Construction of Winnipeg has been awarded a contract for $44,600 for the extension of watermains and services from the present end of the new system at the Experimental Farm west to serve the Indian Residential School.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Fear of escalating costs has led the RM of North Cypress council to approve a construction contract for a new indoor swimming pool and bowling alley in Carberry, on the condition that the Carberry town council does the same.
The office of vital statistics estimates there will be 15,653 births in Manitoba this year, down from 16,141 in 1974. Births have maintained a downward path since 1971, when a total of 17,513 babies were born in Manitoba.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Carling Bassett, Canada’s premier tennis player, was selected The Canadian Press female athlete of the year.
The Christmas Cheer Registry estimates that between 3,000 and 4,000 needy people will have traditional Christmas dinner as a result of volunteer efforts. Most are in the Brandon area, but some live as far away as Rossburn.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Drew Caldwell, David Easter and Allen Meadows have been appointed to the Brandon General Hospital board of directors. Caldwell, city councillor for Rosser ward, replaces Brian Deacon, while Easter, a representative of the RM of Cornwallis, will replace Sonny Evans on the board. Meadows, representing the RM of Elton, replaces Ted Fabian.
Nine school boards across the province have negotiated wage freezes with their teachers. It’s an unprecedented move that is expected to be followed this year by the remaining 48 school divisions and districts.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
RM of Whitehead Reeve Wayne Dobbie says the Kemnay underpass is a disaster waiting to happen. Two semi-trailers in two days — one of them hauling dangerous goods — hit the structure that hangs over Highway 1A, about 12 kilometres west of Brandon.
Labour Minister Nancy Allan announced yesterday that the minimum wage will go up twice in the next 16 months. The first bump will happen April 1, when it goes from $7.25 an hour to $7.60, followed by a 40-cent increase next April to $8 an hour. As well, the province announced it will speed up a planned 0.5 per cent cut to the corporate income tax rate by bringing it in Jan. 1 instead of in July.
TEN YEARS AGO
A regional retail development proposed on the outskirts of southern Brandon took another step forward at city council on Monday. Council signed an agreement that lets VBJ Developments formally study the feasibility of developing 170 acres of farmland into a 50-acre commercial property and 120-acre residential area.
