More Brandon people than ever chose to telephone Christmas greetings to faraway friends and relatives this year. Western region traffic supervisor J.G. McLaughlin said 2,522 calls were made in Brandon on Christmas Day.

FORTY YEARS AGO
Brandon firefighters extinguished a fire Christmas Day on the roof of a house on the 1900 block of Princess Avenue belonging to Brandon University Prof. Bill Paton. The fire caused $10,000 damage and officials believe it was caused by a faulty chimney liner.
One of the world’s biggest automakers, Toyota Motor Corp., will build its first full-scale Canadian assembly plant in Cambridge, Ont., an area hard-hit in recent years by unemployment and plant shutdowns.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Brandon University is mourning the loss of Ferdinand Eckhardt, a supporter of Manitoba’s music and arts communities and a major benefactor to the School of Music. Eckhardt passed away in Winnipeg on Christmas Day at the age of 93.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
A fire at Swan Lake First Nation destroyed a police station and child and family services building late last week. The Dakota Ojibway Child and Family Services building was empty when the fire started at 4:40 p.m. on Dec. 23. The building also contained a community police office.
A live military rocket was discovered in the attic of a couple in the RM of Oakland yesterday, 20 kilometres south of Brandon. “There was no warhead, just the rocket,” said the owner of the residence. The owners found the rocket in the attic and called CFB Shilo, which then called the RCMP, who came and took it away. The couple had recently moved into the residence and was surprised to find the rocket.
TEN YEARS AGO
The Manitoba government’s plan to revamp the electoral system could lead to a younger voting age. Premier Greg Selinger says he is keeping an open mind and awaiting consultations, but believes there are upsides to letting people under 18 cast ballots.
Gabriel (Dancing Gabe) Langlois will make his first-ever paid appearance at a sporting event on Sunday when he watches the Brandon Wheat Kings and Regina Pats at Westman Place.
