SIXTY YEARS AGO
Brandon teens will soon be dancing to the music of a newly formed group, The Missing Links. This band will take its place among other Brandon bands such as the Challengers, Jurations, Majestics, Beathovens, Night Hawks and Shy Guys. The Missing Links include rhythm guitarist Keith Dodds, drummer Ward Simmons, bass guitarist Ray Bojarski, vocalist-saxophonist Clay Sisk and lead guitarist Rick Leech.
The death of Herbert Lionel McGill, well-known businessman of Brandon, occurred in the city today. McGill settled in Brandon in 1918 operated H.L. McGill and Co., General Insurance Agency.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Mail service was restored across the country yesterday, bringing to an end the longest strike in the history of the post office, at 43 days.
Barry Gordon of Souris led his 1,255-pound, half-Simmental steer for the last time at Agribition in Regina last week. A syndicate of some 22 breeders and supporters of Simmental cattle got together to put up $18 a pound ($22,590) for the animal, grand champion of the Canadian Western Agribition.
FORTY YEARS AGO
A city committee hopes discussions between Eaton’s and the union representing company employees can avert layoffs scheduled for next month.
Last week’s cold weather prevented farmers from donating grain to the Canada Foodgrains Bank in Brandon.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Souris is the only community in the southwestern natural gas project that is receiving widespread service this winter. About 100 hookups for commercial facilities, residences and institutions were completed prior to shutdown of construction in late November.
Plastic pipes used to create artificial ice couldn’t be installed in the new Souris arena complex prior to fall freeze-up, so the hockey ice surface won’t be in place this winter as originally planned.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Conservative Leader Stephen Harper announced during a campaign stop this week that if elected prime minister, he will immediately cut the goods and services tax from seven per cent to six, a move that would cost the government an estimated $4.5 billion. He then vowed to cut it down to five per cent within five years.
Crews from CN Rail worked among the toppled cars and spilled grain from a derailment yesterday morning, approximately five kilometres west of Brandon. A dozen cars were damaged when the line of 50 were heading east when the mishap occurred. No one was injured.
TEN YEARS AGO
For the first time in Wrangler National Finals Rodeo history, Manitoba cowboys will be represented after two brothers from Inglis qualified for the largest rodeo event in the world. Starting tomorrow in Las Vegas, Tyrel Larsen, 26, will compete in saddle bronc, while his younger brother Orin Larsen, 24, will compete in the bareback event.
