THIRTY YEARS AGO

For the first time in decades, the tiny village of Napinka won’t be hosting its annual winter bonspiel. The rafters at one end of the natural ice arena have become unglued and the building has been condemned, so the village of 110 people will be without an indoor rink this winter.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

To build or not to build. Architects and environmental engineers have pitched a new multimillion-dollar combined police, fire and 911 station to city council. But some civic leaders, including Brandon Mayor Dave Burgess, don’t like the $27-million price tag that comes attached to the plan. The city’s general manager of protective services, Rich Gregoire, said there has been talk of a new public services building for 10 years, so major upgrades at the two stations have been delayed.

TEN YEARS AGO

By this time next week, Brandonites will be able to sip on Prohibition-era cocktails inside the highly anticipated Prairie Firehouse. After months of construction and menu planning, the transformation of the historic fire hall’s main floor into a restaurant is complete.

Brandon University will explore the idea of expanding its campus to support future growth. President Gervan Fearon said the discussion is still in the early stages; however, one area to consider is the city’s downtown.
