SIXTY YEARS AGO
Contract for the $105,949 beef cattle barn at Brandon’s Experimental Farm has been awarded to Person Construction Co. The barn will offer 6,700 square feet of space for research work on young beef cattle.
Construction will start in August on a new building for the Manitoba Telephone System. It will be a one-storey, two-wing structure built at 18th Street and Victoria Avenue at a cost of $1.8 million.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
The Manitoba Lotteries Commission has authorized a new provincial lottery that will offer a $100,000 first prize, three times a year.
Patricia Hearst said during testimony at her trial that her Symbionese Liberation Army kidnappers orced her to embrace violent revolution and enslaved her mind with the belief she would never escape the terrorist underground.

THIRTY YEARS AGO
Regularly scheduled flights returned to Brandon today when Athabaska Airways began passenger service. The Athabaska route will link the city with Winnipeg and several communities in Saskatchewan, including Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert.
A groomed trail through the Turtle Mountains is attracting attention from snowmobilers in Manitoba and several northern states. The trail passes through Turtle Mountain Provincial Park, then connects with Goodlands, Waskada and Deloraine.

After three years of planning and nearly a year of construction, the Keystone Centre’s $8.8-million Agricultural Centre of Excellence is almost ready to open its doors for the 2006 Royal Manitoba Winter Fair.
Fire has flattened a popular watering hole and pizza place, leaving Shilo soldiers and their families with one less dining option. Cecil’s Pizza and Bar in Sprucewoods, which stood near the gates of CFB Shilo, was destroyed despite the efforts of the Shilo Fire Department. No one was in the building at the time of the blaze, which caused more than $100,000 damage.
TEN YEARS AGO
Barring a positive test, cattle farmers near Riding Mountain National Park will finally see an end to the exhaustive, costly and often traumatic tuberculosis testing that their herds have been subjected to for years. Veterinarian Dr. Allan Preston, who was charged with eradicating tuberculosis near Riding Mountain at the end of 2012, said the Canadian Food Inspection Agency indicated that negative tests in cattle and wildlife this season will result in the suspension of on-site testing for cattle.
Police believed an infant was the victim of shaken baby syndrome when they began an investigation that would later be deemed a homicide after the child died. Early details of the investigation have been revealed in documents filed in support of a warrant to search the girl’s Sioux Valley Dakota Nation home.
