SIXTY YEARS AGO
Doreen Terrell (nee Duke) is basking in the warmth of Caracas, Venezuela, until Feb. 15 after being selected as Best Bunny at the Phoenix, Ariz., Playboy Club. Terrell, originally from Brandon, was voted Best Bunny of the Year in 1964. She graduated from Brandon Collegiate in 1957, won the Miss Manitoba title the same year, left here in 1958 and has been associated with the Playboy Clubs for the past four years.
A computer has replaced a dozen women in the records department of the Toronto Stock Exchange. The change, which took place this week, had been expected to be implemented two years ago, but technical problems delayed the switch.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
The Brandon Chamber of Commerce has expressed its support for the stand taken by the provincial doctors in their dispute with the provincial government over a new fee schedule. There are 45 doctors in Brandon who have opted out of the province’s health-insurance program scheme.
City employees are going to be the first drivers in Brandon who will be compelled to wear seatbelts. Council decided to spend about $2,300 to equip all city vehicles with seatbelts.
FORTY YEARS AGO
A “joke candidate” who promoted apathy among students unseated incumbent Ruth Pryzner in a surprise election for president of the Brandon University Students’ Union. Music student James Malley garnered about 50 more votes than his competition. The following day, he resigned.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
A Brandon man who restores buildings damaged by fire for a living will be starting work on his own home after a fire gutted part of it today. Ray Cancade was working on a job in Virden when he found out that a third-floor bedroom in his home was destroyed by fire. The fire caused about $30,000 in damage.
Brandon University’s annual grant from the city has been set at $50,000 for each of the next three years. Today, a bylaw was passed to provide financial assistance to BU in the form of grants from the city’s general revenue.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
The 105-year-old Minnedosa United Church was destroyed by fire early this morning, leaving residents in shock as Yellowhead RCMP investigated a possible case of arson. At 4:45 a.m., the Minnedosa volunteer fire department and RCMP members were called to the scene as flames flared out of the church, situated on the town’s main street. RCMP Sgt. E.A. Davidson said two persons of interest have been placed in custody, but could not confirm the cause of the fire
TEN YEARS AGO
A new state-of-the-art clinic might be the cure to Minnedosa’s doctor shortage ailment, according to the community’s economic development officer. Vern May is hopeful the community can break ground on a 4,800-square-foot clinic as soon as this summer.
Approximately 50 supporters showed up to the East End Community Centre for Brandon East NDP MLA Drew Caldwell’s nomination meeting. The meeting, which featured orange balloons and election signs, was a formality as the long-serving MLA was acclaimed. Prior to Caldwell’s acceptance speech, Premier Greg Selinger told the crowd the NDP government hasn’t always got it right, but investment in health care, infrastructure and education have made the province stronger.
