Looking Back

SEVENTY YEARS AGO

Seven student nurses of the Brandon General Hospital received their caps in an impressive ceremony held this week. Graduating were Patricia McCunn, Janice MacDonald, Helen Conroy, Shirley Steppler, Sheila Watson, Sarah Flemming and Marjorie Edwards.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

Campus Liberals did it again this year, voting at their annual convention that the Queen no longer be recognized as the official monarch of Canada. Delegates to the Canadian University Liberal Federation voted 60-47 on the resolution, which drew heavy fire last year from Progressive Conservative Leader John Diefenbaker.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

The Palace Theatre, on Carberry’s Main Street, will reopen its doors this month. The theatre is a historic building at which many prominent politicians addressed rallies, including former prime minister John Diefenbaker.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Premier Howard Pawley, fresh from his attack on oil companies, turned on the banks by promising to shelter debt-ridden farmers from foreclosure.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Regina has been chosen to play host to the Canadian women’s curling championships in 1998.

The Canadian dollar closed at 72.46 cents US today, down 0.39 of a cent.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A petrol punch-up in Brandon gave car owners a little more jump at the pumps yesterday. Around the city, many gas bars — including the new Safeway outlet at the Corral Centre — posted fuel prices at 73.9 cents per litre, 10.5 cents less than the same day one week ago. The Victoria Esso and car wash on Victoria Avenue only briefly displayed the rock-bottom 73.9 cents per litre sign yesterday morning before pumping their price back up to 87 cents by 1:30 p.m.

TEN YEARS AGO

Ty Lewis and Jayce Hawryluk both scored twice and Tanner Kaspick tallied in his return to the Brandon Wheat Kings lineup as they beat the Saskatoon Blades 7-1 at Westman Place on Friday.

Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government marked 100 days in power with gusto Friday, adding a slick social media twist that included a day-by-day multimedia montage — think Stephen Harper’s much-maligned 24 Seven vanity videos on steroids — and the 44-year-old prime minister responding to questions on Twitter.

Picking up a pencil or typing on a laptop are tasks that many people may take for granted. But for 25-year-old Ryan Nelson, putting his thoughts down on paper is not such an easy task. Nelson has cerebral palsy, and is physically unable to move or speak. However, where there’s a will, there’s a way. The avid reader and budding author is able to communicate through blinking his eyes. With the help of direct support worker Matt Harrison, Nelson is in the process of writing his first novel, “The Crusades of Captain Rye and His Renegades.”
