SIXTY YEARS AGO

Reeve Albert T. Chapman of the RM of Daly has been elected the first president of WestMan Regional Development Ltd.

A customer and two servers were injured in Neepawa today when an explosion and fire demolished the restaurant and service station owned by Larry Evans. At one point, nine people were trapped inside the blazing two-storey building.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

The Daly Gas Storage Ltd., a company operating near Virden, has been issued an exploration permit to develop potential natural gas storage facilities in underground natural reservoirs.

Diane Mahoney, 15, was recently chosen queen as Green Acres Community Centre held its annual winter carnival. Pam Hean, 13, was selected as princess.

FORTY YEARS AGO

The fifth powerful Pacific storm in eight days pounded the western United States today as more than 10,000 people remained out of their homes invaded by floodwaters, landslides and avalanches.

While campaigning across western Manitoba, Progressive Conservative Leader Gary Filmon took time out to attend a tribute for retiring Russell-Roblin PC MLA Wally McKenzie in Roblin. Filmon said the 71-year-old former politician was one of the best constituency representatives anywhere.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

A blackened shell was all that remained of Northside Mazda after an intense blaze tore through the local car dealership this morning. No one was injured in the fire, which destroyed the building and 12 vehicles parked in or near the structure. Firefighters managed to save Precision Toyota, which is located next door.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Blue Hills RCMP have charged a second Brandon man with arson in connection with a blaze that destroyed a 108-year-old church. Built in 1896, the Brandon Hills United Church burned down on April 25, 2004, and church members thought the case had gone cold until charges were laid this week.

He pondered the idea, polled on it and put it to people in this province, but ultimately Brian Pallister decided to stay put in Ottawa rather than seek the Manitoba Progressive Conservative party leadership. Pallister, with what he described as “mixed emotions,” announced in Portage la Prairie yesterday he will remain Conservative MP for Portage-Lisgar.

TEN YEARS AGO

The Brandon School Division has rescheduled a portion of a Vincent Massey High School trip due to international security concerns, according to a source familiar with the travel plans. The trip — which was supposed to feature stops in France, including Paris — will now centre on nine days in Spain.

Tyler Coulter scored his first career hat trick and added two assists as the Brandon Wheat Kings beat the Kootenay Ice 11-1 at Westman Place on Wednesday.
