Fire Pumper No. 1 is heading back into service. The Brandon Fire Department has spent the past year restoring the vintage vehicle — a 1929 Bickle, which has an important place in the department’s history because it put the horse-drawn pumpers out to pasture. It will be used for parades and for maintaining the department’s history.

Firefighters say a quick-thinking child saved several lives yesterday by alerting them to a fire that forced the evacuation of a downtown apartment block and sent two people to hospital. “If it wasn’t for that child phoning, we’d be looking at a few deaths because none of the smoke alarms were activated due to tampering with the smoke detectors,” Capt. Kevin Groff of the Brandon Fire Department said. Firefighters weren’t sure exactly who the child was, or even whether it was a boy or a girl. But Groff said they believed the child was about 12 years old.
