SIXTY YEARS AGO

Air Cadet Wallace Robert Peel, 18, of Foxwarren was surprised to learn recently that he was the winner of the 1965 W.F. Tudhope Memorial Trophy competition of the Royal Canadian Flying Club Association. Peel earned his pilot’s licence last summer and was one of nine people in the national competition for the trophy.

Manitoba school boards have been challenged to experiment more freely with the shape and design of the schools they build. Dave Friesen, a Winkler teacher whose special study is school building, called upon trustees to conduct pilot programs to try building innovations.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Federal Transport Minister Otto Lang may be planning a Brandon-Dauphin-Yorkton air service using de Havilland Twin Otter aircraft from the now-defunct Airtransit project.

George Vercaigne, a Brandon-area farmer, has been appointed to the advisory committee of the federal agricultural stabilization board.

FORTY YEARS AGO

U.S. President Ronald Reagan, responding to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev’s arms control proposal, has proposed the elimination of U.S. and Soviet medium-range missiles in Europe and Asia during the next three years, a U.S. official says.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba was recently honoured for three awards at the annual Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions convention in Winnipeg. Promotion, advertising and communication excellence awards are presented according to fair advertising budgets. The Manitoba Summer Fair won best print series, black and white. The Fall Fair captured best radio commercial. The best overall campaign also went to the Ex.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Manitoba’s crumbling highways and byways are facing a disastrous one-two punch thanks to unseasonably warm weather and poor infrastructure funding. And if the problems aren’t fixed soon, those in the know say it’s going to cost us … big time. A month previous, The Sun reported that an unusually warm January was turning Brandon’s roads into Swiss cheese, as potholes began showing up on many roads in the city.

Canadian speedskaters Clara Hughes and Cindy Klassen, who both hail from Winnipeg, were overjoyed as they sang “O Canada” during medal ceremonies yesterday at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Turin, Italy. Hughes and Klassen won gold and bronze, respectively, in the women’s 5,000 metres.

TEN YEARS AGO

Canadian Blood Services won’t be stopping in Russell this year after the organization cancelled clinics in the community. Tracy Smith, Manitoba director of donor relations, said the clinic hosted Feb. 2 and 3 in Russell will be the last one for at least a year, when the organization will re-evaluate donor communities.

Manitoba voters not comfortable being labelled male or female can pencil in their own term when Elections Manitoba enumerators come knocking — a first in the province. The option, which Elections Manitoba studied carefully but launched quietly, is meant to respect transgender, gender-fluid or gender-neutral voters who don’t identify as male or female. The move puts the agency a step ahead of others in the province that collect gender information, such as Manitoba Public Insurance.
