SEVENTY YEARS AGO
The Commons has given speedy approval to a government measure that will funnel an estimated $32 million this year to the Canadian Wheat Board to help western farmers bear storage charges on the board’s big wheat stocks.
SIXTY YEARS AGO
An Edmonton couple and their four children escaped injuries when their single-engine plane crashed in a farm field northwest of Hamiota. The farm land was owned by J.D. Mathison. A helicopter from CJATC Rivers transported the Albertans to Rivers, where they caught a train to Edmonton.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Joe Boyarski’s Beacon Lunch restaurant closed for the last time this afternoon. The 24-seat counter restaurant is located on Ninth Street. Boyarski sold the property to the city for the proposed downtown shopping mall development.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The Kirkcaldy Heights subdivision got a long-awaited shot in the arm when the province announced it has earmarked $2.9 million for construction of a new school.
The city is moving cautiously toward establishing two-hour limits at downtown parking meters.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Brandon-Souris MP Glen McKinnon will now be considered the provincial voice of the federal government. McKinnon was acclaimed as the chair of the Manitoba Liberal Caucus.
Rick Plaisier, a school principal from Virden, has been elected president of the Manitoba Association of Principals.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Manitoba’s Emergency Measures Organization is still wading its way through disaster assistance claims from this summer’s flood. There were 507 claims submitted from Brandon, and money has been paid for 271 so far. About $454,000 has been paid so far out of the $600,000 claimed to this point. The average amount paid so far has been about $1,700. Most of the damage claims are for ruined carpet, paint and drywall in basements.
TEN YEARS AGO
A group of nine teens from St. Lazare made waves on a pretty big stage earlier this month. The band L’Écho de la Vallée, made of teenagers from grades 7 to 12, won second place and $300 at Chicane électrique, a battle of the bands-style contest held by Radio-Canada in conjunction with the Festival du Voyageur — the annual celebration of French-Canadian culture in Winnipeg. It was a big step for the fledgling group, all of whom attend École Saint-Lazare.
Bubbly and quick with a smile, a Brandon senior who was killed in a two-vehicle collision this weekend was dedicated to her job caring for the elderly, friends said. Home-care aide Hazel Link went above and beyond for her clients, they said, using her spare time to style their hair.
