FIFTY YEARS AGO

Joe Clark, a candidate for the leadership of the federal Conservative party, was in Brandon as part of a western Canadian tour.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Eighteen workers at Virden’s B.P. Kent Flour Mills Ltd. went on strike this morning to back demands for a first contract.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Brandon was a bright spot in a dim year for new home builders in Manitoba. The province’s second-largest city was one of only two communities to record a rise in new housing starts in the fourth quarter of 1995, the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corp. announced.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The reconstruction of the Brandon Hills United Church is set to begin in the spring, two years after the historic building burned to the ground. Wilbert Chapman, chairman of the church building committee, said that the congregation has agreed on a design, although it needs to be approved by architects before construction begins.

The gun was a toy and the pellets were plastic, but the consequences were quite real for two Virden high school students accused of shooting a teacher in the head. The shooting happened when a group of students were seeing a movie as part a school outing on the last day of class in December, Fort La Bosse School Division Supt. Jaclyn Evaschesen said yesterday. As some of the students were walking back to school from the theatre with a teacher, the accused students drove by in a vehicle and one of them pointed a toy pistol out the window and fired. The teacher was reportedly struck in the forehead with a pellet, but not seriously injured. Evaschesen would not discuss the details of the students’ punishments, but said the consequences would be appropriate to the nature of the offence.

TEN YEARS AGO

A lead-footed mom has been ordered to do 30 hours of community service work for speeding along the Trans-Canada Highway at 170 km/h with her three children in an SUV. Judge Donovan Dvorak said that when he began his legal career about 20 years ago, it was common to catch speeders at 20 to 35 km/h over the limit. Now, as a judge, it’s not unusual for him to deal with speeders who were going along the Trans-Canada at 40 km/h to 60 km/h over the limit.

Reid Duke had six points and Ivan Provorov scored a pair of goals and added three assists in his return to the Brandon Wheat Kings as they beat the Prince Albert Raiders 8-1 at Westman Place on Friday. It was Brandon’s first win in three tries against Prince Albert this Western Hockey League season.
