SIXTY YEARS AGO
Premier Duff Roblin and Agriculture Minister George Hutton will be the featured speakers in Brandon Jan. 24 at the second annual provincial farm outlook conference.
The Brandon planning advisory board kicked off a new year by tackling the problem of high-rise construction in the city. Meeting for the first time in 1966, the board authorized the provincial planning service to make a study of high-rise construction in Brandon and report back with a recommendation on such construction. At present, construction on non-institutional buildings in Brandon is limited to three storeys or 45 feet.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Brandon native Bruce Irving Rankin, a 58-year-old career diplomat, has been appointed ambassador to Japan. Rankin had been a trade official in Australia, China, India, Spain, Switzerland, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic.
As of Jan. 1, federal old age security pension and guaranteed income supplements have been increased to a maximum of $226.12 per month for people 65 or older with no other income. Married pensioners, or couples where one member is a pensioner and the other 60 to 64, are to receive a maximum of $431.36 per month.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Last night featured the largest crowd for a Brandon Wheat Kings game since March 1984 with an attendance of 2,966 fans.
Immunization against red measles was in full swing in Brandon schools this week. As of now, there are 60 cases in western Manitoba, with 53 of those in Brandon.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Confident that Canada will remain united, a western Canadian company is branching out into Quebec. Brandon-based We Care Home-Health Services announced it has opened an office in Quebec City to further develop the eastern market.
Two nurses at the Rivers hospital are circulating a petition to try to keep that institution from being closed. But the CEO of the Riverdale Health Services District is skeptical that the effort will do any good.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
The only scheduled jet service out of Brandon will end five weeks earlier than expected. Colleen Booth of Transat Holidays said the company decided to cancel the last five return flights of the season from Brandon to Cancun, Mexico, due to a lack of interest.
Brandon-Souris candidates — Lisa Gallagher (Communist), Colin Atkins (Christian Heritage), Murray Downing (Liberal), Bob Senff (NDP), Merv Tweed (Conservative), Brad Bird (Green party) and Mike Volek (Independent) — participated in the Brandon Sun All-Candidates Forum in Souris yesterday before a crowd of about 150 people.
TEN YEARS AGO
David Bowie, the chameleon-like star who transformed the sound — and the look — of rock with his audacious creativity and his sexually ambiguous makeup and costumes, died of cancer Sunday. Bowie, whose hits included “Space Oddity,” “Fame,” “Heroes” and “Let’s Dance,” died surrounded by family, a representative said early Monday. The singer, who was 69, had fought cancer for 18 months.
The Samaritan House is looking to team up with businesses in Brandon to help people get back on their feet. Executive director Thea Dennis said the new Samaritan House Employment Resource Centre is designed to assist job seekers while at the same time offers free advertising for local employers in search of workers.
