City council accepted a recommendation to hire Winnipeg firm Kraft Construction Co. Ltd., to build an addition to police headquarters at a cost of almost $1 million.

The NDP government plans to introduce legislation to abolish purple fuel for farmers and replace it with a rebate system, Agriculture Minister Bill Uruski said.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

A Saskatchewan-based air carrier will begin service from Brandon to points east and west of here next month. Athabaska Airways is scheduled to pick up where Bearskin Airlines left off on Feb. 11. The new air service will offer Brandon travellers two daily return flights to Winnipeg and one return flight to Regina and Saskatoon.

City council has unanimously approved an agreement to enter into a formal sister-city relationship with Huron, S.D.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A non-profit group has completed its search for a downtown address to open a homeless shelter, but still needs money to make it a reality. StreetLove Inc. took possession of the United Grill Ltd. building at 33 10th St. on Jan. 1. The group failed to secure the former Manitoba Telecom Service building at 19 Ninth St. in July when it fell short of its $250,000 fundraising goal, and turned down the former Artistic Tattoo building at 321 10th St. because it was too small.

The weird weather in Westman continues. After weeks of above-normal temperatures, cloudy days and fog, today it was freezing rain. The rain blanketed cars, streets and sidewalks and left a thick layer of ice over almost everything.

TEN YEARS AGO

One person is dead following a head-on collision between a semi-trailer truck and minivan on Highway 83 about five kilometres north of Pipestone on Thursday. RCMP spokeswoman Holly Plato confirmed the lone occupant of the van, a man, was killed at the scene.

Two men have been jailed for a violent robbery on the Eighth Street bridge in which one of the three young victims had a seizure. Judge Donovan Dvorak noted how the aging bridge isn’t safe for vehicles to cross, and recent robberies suggest it isn’t safe for pedestrians, either.
