SEVENTY YEARS AGO
Preliminary work on the new federal building in Brandon got underway this week. Workers are setting up a temporary office on the 11th Street site. The Bird Construction Company from Winnipeg is handling the building contract.
SIXTY YEARS AGO
Belmont’s main street has been threatened by fire twice in less than a week. The volunteer fire department was called early Sunday morning to attend a blaze in the rear of the Belmont Bakery, the property of L.C. Dandridge of Third Street. Fire had broken out in the building next door to the bakery, the Belmont Poolroom and Barber Shop a week earlier.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
In the first eight months of 1974, 2,597 more people left Manitoba than entered. In the same period in 1975, the trend started to reverse and 462 more people entered the province than left.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Workers on strike against B.P. Kent Flour Mills in Virden manned a picket line yesterday. Members of Local 111 of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union walked off the job a week ago after negotiations for a first contract broke off.
The Kinsmen Club of Brandon pledged $150,000 to help finance the completion of Brandon University’s music building.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Safe Walk took its first steps last night toward improving campus security at Brandon University. Eight student volunteers, armed with cellular phones, two-way radios and bright yellow jerseys, will be available until the end of April to provide free, late-night escorts to classes, dormitories, parking lots, bus stops and nearby houses.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
More than 60 infantry soldiers and gunners from CFB Shilo ship out to Kandahar this weekend as part of Canada’s commitment to increase its forces in Afghanistan. The deployment comes days after a suicide bomber attacked a Canadian military convoy in the Afghan city, killing a senior diplomat and seriously injuring three Edmonton-based soldiers.
TEN YEARS AGO
A slow-moving affordable housing complex project for Brandon University students with families is set to proceed after the provincial government announced $12 million in new funding on Friday. BU president Gervan Fearon said ground for the $13.5-million project is set to be broken this summer near Sioux Valley High School just off Victoria Avenue. The three-storey, 24-unit apartment building will have two- or three-bedroom units and be surrounded by 18 three-bedroom townhouses. The units will be ready for the 2017-18 school year.
