SEVENTY YEARS AGO

Edward Conley was born just 26 minutes after midnight on Jan. 1 to be Brandon’s New Year’s baby. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Peter Conley of Brandon.

Top athletes in Brandon for 1955 chosen by the Sun sports staff are: first, Doug Clark; second, Frank McKinnon; third, Dave (Chips) Adams; fourth, Bill Shaddock; and fifth, Jim Slevin.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

A six-pound, 12-ounce brunette handily won the 1966 First Baby contest at 12:53 a.m. New Year’s Day at the Brandon General Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Allan Reed of Brandon rejoiced after learning that their seventh child, Sheila, was the first baby born in the Brandon area in 1966.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Brandon’s New Year’s baby was born this year one hour and 19 minutes into 1976. A spokesman at Brandon General Hospital said the baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. David Wolfe of Virden.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Twenty Brandon Eaton’s employees will sue the union representing them for $10 million on the basis it has failed to act in their best interest during the ongoing labour dispute.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Darcy Mianne Magnowski entered the world 15 minutes into the new year to become Brandon General Hospital’s first baby of 1996. She is the third daughter of Cathleen Petz-Magnowski and Ken Magnowski of Russell.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

She waited until nearly the last hour, but Allyson Petit made it into this world just in time to be Brandon’s New Year’s baby. Born at 10:58 p.m. on Jan. 1, she is officially the first baby born in the Wheat City in 2006. Allyson’s parents are Marie-Eve Duclos and Guy Petit.

TEN YEARS AGO

Brandon’s New Year’s baby was born at 6:59 a.m. on Jan. 1 — just a half-hour after her parents arrived at the hospital from Treherne. Adam and Ashley Lounsbury managed to remain calm during the hour and a half drive. Baby Lounsbury weighed seven pounds and 15 ounces, measuring 21.5 inches. She is the couple’s second child, joining her two-year-old brother, Nolan.

Braden Calvert’s remarkable run from provincial to national to world junior curling champion earned him the 58th annual Brandon Sun’s H.L. (Krug) Crawford Memorial Award, which epitomizes sporting excellence in southwestern Manitoba.

The accolades keep rolling in for the Lois Fowler foursome as they are the Brandon Sun’s Mike Jones Westman Team of the Year, winning the 42nd annual edition of the award.

Canada capped a perfect run at the Spengler Cup on Thursday by edging HC Lugano 4-3 in the championship game at Vaillant Arena. Matt D’Agostini scored the winning goal to help Canada to its fourth straight victory and first Spengler title since 2012.
