SIXTY YEARS AGO

St. Michael’s Academy students and faculty are pleased to announce that Frances Torgerson was named as teenager of the week.

Mrs. Charlie Hanska, the first centenarian on the Birdtail Sioux First Nation, celebrated her 100th birthday recently at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Lawrence Bunn. Mrs. Hanska remembers when the steamboat came along the Assiniboine River and when mule deer, goats and buffalo roamed the area freely.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Residents opposing the city’s involvement in the development of a downtown shopping mall found out yesterday that their protests are several months too late. The city is already involved in the project. It has spent about $480,000 for seven of the nine properties that will make up a site for the proposed mall.

The 14 doctors serving Portage la Prairie voted unanimously to opt out of the provincial medical insurance plan. A majority of doctors who practise at Brandon’s two medical clinics will opt out of the provincial medical care insurance plan, Dr. R.F. Meyers said last night following a two-hour meeting of 58 doctors.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Marquis Project officials are busy unpacking boxes at their new Seventh Street office above the Trade Fair Exchange. The group, a non-profit education organization concerned about world development issues, moved from its Eighth Street location because it needed more space.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

A recent casualty in the local restaurant scene leaves Brandon’s downtown mall without a full-service eatery. The Kornerstone Family Restaurant in the Brandon Gallery closed Dec. 31, putting 15 people out of work.

About 40 snowmobilers filled up at the Trans-Canada Petro-Canada station before hitting the end of their annual Flin Flon-to-Brandon trek. The riders were taking part in the Lions Journey for Sight.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Military officials will start sealing up an asbestos-type of insulation called Zonolite in hundreds of homes on the Canadian Forces bases in Shilo and elsewhere before the end of March. The work is part of a $2.8-million budget this year authorized to protect military personnel and their families from exposure to the insulation. At Shilo, 431 homes have been identified by the Department of National Defence containing the hazardous material.

Crowds flocked to Manitoba Ag Days this week at the Keystone Centre. Canada’s largest indoor agricultural show attracted more than 32,000 people over three days.

TEN YEARS AGO

A longtime Brandon School Division trustee will vie for the Brandon West seat in the upcoming provincial election. Linda Ross is the acclaimed NDP candidate for the constituency, following a nomination meeting on Wednesday night.

Just days after WestJet Encore launched its second daily flight out of Brandon, the airline has announced a reduction in service. The number of flights per week between Brandon and Calgary will fall from 14 to 11, effective Feb. 15. The second flight will be removed entirely for the summer season.
