RCMP Staff Sgt. John Haley braved stifling heat, survived a terrorist plot and could only hope those he tried to help would survive. But it was worth it, said Haley, who returned safely to Neepawa last week after helping to bring democracy to Iraq. Haley, 51, was stationed for six months in Amman, Jordan, where he taught democratic police practices to roughly 1,500 Iraqi cadets. The Spruce Plains RCMP detachment commander was selected for his Jordan mission by the RCMP’s International Training and Peacekeeping Branch.
TEN YEARS AGO
The historic home that went up in flames in Glenboro last weekend was not insured, the town’s fire chief said Thursday. Steve Bjornson, who co-ordinated about three dozen firefighters from four departments in the response last Saturday evening, said a cause hasn’t been confirmed, but the fire started in the basement, where there was a wood-fired furnace. He said it’s uncommon for such historic structures to be uninsured.
Jordan Papirny made 33 saves and the Brandon Wheat Kings scored two power-play goals as they beat the Prince Albert Raiders 3-0 at the Art Hauser Centre in Prince Albert on Friday. The Wheat Kings (28-13-2-2) extended their lead in the East Division to three points over the Raiders, who fell to 26-15-4-1.
