A fire causing damage estimated at $500 swept through Halliday’s Tailor Shop in Carberry. Furnishings in the building, located on Main Street, were reported totally lost.

An explosion and fire at 5:45 a.m. today demolished the Griswold Supply Store and the residence of its owners, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Flemington, on the second floor of the building.

Libyan leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi, who has been accused of harbouring a terrorist group blamed for attacks on Rome and Vienna airports, said retaliation against Libya would lead to an “interminable war” throughout the Middle East and Mediterranean regions.

Dr. Helen Marsh, a former publisher of the Dauphin Herald, passed away suddenly on Dec. 31 at the Dauphin Regional Health Care Centre at the age of 78. Marsh, a former town councillor who was also a UN delegate in 1962, received many recognitions and awards throughout her life.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
They may be without candidates and soon to be without an experienced leader, but Brandon voters now favour the provincial Progressive Conservatives over the governing New Democratic Party, a Probe Research poll conducted exclusively for the Brandon Sun finds. According to a survey of 358 people, if a provincial election were held tomorrow, the Progressive Conservative party would stand an excellent chance of taking both Brandon seats from New Democrat MLAs Scott Smith (Brandon West) and Drew Caldwell (Brandon East).

A nine-hour standoff between RCMP and a Minnedosa man ended at 3 a.m. on Friday after officers fired tear gas canisters through the windows of a residence.
She began as a 1970s soul singer hyped as the next Aretha Franklin and peaked in the 1990s as an old-fashioned stylist and time-defying duet partner to her late father, Nat (King) Cole. Natalie Cole, who died Thursday in Los Angeles at age 65, was a Grammy-winning superstar honoured and haunted by comparisons to others.
