Brandon’s old Oak Theatre on 10th Street is currently undergoing extensive renovations in preparation for its opening as The Town Centre on May 1. The theatre will have approximately 300 seats.

FORTY YEARS AGO

The Springhill Hutterite colony has tried to bypass government rules aimed at ensuring a $3.8-million hog plant it is building near Neepawa is safe, says the Brandon manager of the Manitoba Water Services Board.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Even though Leech Printing is moving most of its printing equipment to a new Braecrest Drive plant, the third-generation, family-owned printer will maintain a presence at its 18th Street and Park Avenue location. Plans are underway to construct a retail/office building at 857 18th St.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Dakota Nation Winterfest wrapped up yesterday, and organizers said attendance was up and the event will probably break even. About 7,000 people visited the festival during each of the three days. And although the rental fees for the Keystone Centre were higher than last year, the Winter Fest may earn a small profit this time around.

TEN YEARS AGO

After spending the last 45 years in storage, the historic Coronation Bell will finally be dusted off and put on display. Brandon Fire and Emergency Services was approved for $30,000 in the city’s 2016 budget to move ahead with mounting the 4,400-pound heritage piece in the museum located at the No. 1 Fire Hall.

Andrew Koep had two goals as the Edmonton Oil Kings won their third straight against the Brandon Wheat Kings this season, beating them 4-3 at Rexall Place on Friday. The Oil Kings also won the first two Western Hockey League games 4-3, in a shootout in Brandon and in overtime in Edmonton. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak on the road for Brandon.
