Looking Back

SIXTY YEARS AGO

Forty-six people were involved and five injured in the collision of a Brandon School Division school bus, a car and a station wagon yesterday afternoon on the Trans-Canada Highway two miles west of Kemnay.

A fire early today severely damaged about two-thirds of the Kroeker Seeds Ltd. plant in Winkler, 50 miles southwest of Winnipeg.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Bruce Danyluk, general manager of the West-Man Regional Development Corp. since March 1974, has resigned. Roy Brown, the development consultant for the corporation, has been named administrative officer.

Western grain producers will have an additional $387 million to inject into the Prairie economy within the next two months as they receive final payments for grain delivered during the 1974-75 crop year.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Brandon Ald. Jim McCrae is taking aim at provincial labour legislation, which he says is responsible for Eaton’s layoffs. He will introduce a motion in two weeks calling on council to urge the province to amend first contract legislation and review the law regarding union description.

Public health nurses started vaccinating students in Brandon schools today in an effort to control a measles outbreak. The number of reported cases of red measles in southwestern Manitoba has grown from 12 to 40 in one week.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

The big banks have lowered mortgage rates in hopes of enticing debt-weary consumers to take the plunge into home ownership, but some real estate agents wonder whether the shift will get the market moving.

Drifting snow and a gusting south wind forced airlines to cancel three flights and delay several others at Winnipeg International Airport yesterday, disrupting the travel plans of hundreds of people.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Brandon’s east end finally has a much-needed convenience store. Winks has opened on the corner of 13th Street East and Lorne Avenue East. Owner Sam Mulaw has spent about $70,000 renovating the building, which has been vacant for more than two years. In addition to a convenience store, Winks offers Amazing Video with more than 600 titles (building up to 1,000 titles), Western Union and an ATM machine. There’s also a gaming and computer room with access to big-screen televisions complete with complete with PlayStation and Xbox, and two computers with Internet access.

TEN YEARS AGO

As the Canadian dollar continues to drop, the local economy is feeling the spinoffs — both positive and negative. The dollar fell below 71 cents US for the first time in more than 12 years on Wednesday, resulting in an exchange rate that makes cross-border shopping trips less enticing for many Canadians.

North Korea’s declaration that it had tested a hydrogen bomb for the first time was greeted with widespread condemnation — but also skepticism — as world powers vowed Wednesday to punish the impoverished and defiant nation with new international sanctions.
