SEVENTY YEARS AGO

R.D. Robertson, provincial minister of pubic works, tried out a pioneer in the province’s transportation history, a Surrey with a fringe on top, during the 75th Jubilee celebrations at Kenton yesterday. Mr. Robertson, whose grandparents were settlers of the Kenton district, was guest of honour at the celebrations. The Surrey, wonderfully preserved, belonged to the Kent family, after whom Kenton was named.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

The days of the one-hour-for-five-cents parking meters may be limited in Brandon. In its five-point request to city council, the downtown parking authority suggested that the meters be changed to 10 cents per hour and five cents per half-hour.

A Brandon man, Col. R.R. Barber, 49, currently base commander at CFB Toronto, has been appointed chief of staff for operations at Air Command in Winnipeg, the Defence Department has announced.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Mark Stocks of Kelowna, B.C., brought in top honours for full untrimmed beards during the beard growing contest at the Souris 125th homecoming this weekend. This was Stocks’ third time winning the competition, as his other victories came in 25-year intervals in 1956 and 1981. More than 3,000 visitors registered for the nine-day reunion to mark the town’s anniversary.

TEN YEARS AGO

With its bright lighting, a fresh paint job and new tiling, the renovated Sportsplex pool is making a splash with swimmers. “The facility seems really nice, seems a lot cleaner and more open,” said Isabelle Stewart, 17, a member of Brandon Bluefins Swim Club. The pool reopened this week, after a year of construction to give the aging facility a $4-million overhaul.

An army veteran killed by Dallas police after the sniper slayings of five officers had amassed a personal arsenal at his suburban home, including bomb-making materials, bulletproof vests, rifles, ammunition and a journal of combat tactics, authorities said Friday. The man identified as 25-year- old Micah Johnson told authorities he was upset about the fatal police shootings of two black men earlier this week and wanted to exterminate whites, “especially white officers,” officials said.
