A new postmaster has been appointed at Rivers, taking over duties as of July 12. W.C. Bennett, formerly of Miniota, is replacing G.R. Allen, who resigned recently.

The aged are to be guaranteed a monthly income of $105, made up of a $75-a-month old age pension plus up to $30 more, depending on how much income they have from other sources.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

The anti-inflation board has ordered a rollback in the 1976 salary contract Brandon firefighters negotiated with the city. A two-stage 12 per cent increase has been cut back to a total nine per cent increase for the year.

A survey of 950 farmers in southern Manitoba indicates many are suffering from lung disease likely caused by exposure to grain dust and damp hay.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson continued his recent domination of American rival Carl Lewis by winning yesterday’s 100-metre sprint at the Goodwill Games in near world-record time.

A group of angry parents has gone over the heads of Brandon school trustees in an attempt to overturn a board decision that prevents their children from attending Vincent Massey High School.

North American Life Insurance of Winnipeg has been bought out by another company — ManuLife Financial — and operations are being phased out in Winnipeg. Data entry at Boissevain had already ceased by the beginning of this month.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The air temperature at the Spruce Woods Provincial Park’s sand dunes reached as high as 35.7 C yesterday. The sand itself registered a scorching 45.4 C.

Six CKX-TV staff will be laid off as the station’s owner CHUM Ltd. restructures, and as Bell Globemedia Inc. makes a $1.7-billion bid to buy CHUM — a move that some say will reshape the country’s media landscape. The layoffs by CHUM come under a series of changes that will cut 191 full-time and 90 part-time positions across the country in an effort to save $14.7 million per year.

TEN YEARS AGO

A 22-year-old man is dead following a hit and run over the weekend near Carberry, according to Blue Hills RCMP. At around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, police said they received a report of an unresponsive man lying in the middle of Highway 5, just south of the Sand Hills Casino. The victim was later pronounced dead at hospital. Multiple people identified the man as Blair Martin from Swan Lake First Nation.

Now that Canada Day festivities have come and gone, work has begun in earnest on the first phase of the Assiniboine River Corridor Master Plan. An outdoor amphitheatre and celebration space north of the Riverbank Discovery Centre, dubbed Festival Park, will be one of the first projects to be completed.
