SIXTY YEARS AGO
City detectives report that no progress has yet been made in the investigation of a break-in that took place at Watt’s Men’s Wear on Princess Avenue two days ago. The clothing store, which is visible from the police station, was broken into by thieves who seemed to be professional at their work. C.A. Watt, owner of the store, estimated that about $4,000 worth of merchandise was taken, including approximately 75 suits, some shirts and sweaters and other articles. The thieves ignored silver in the cash register, and took no jewelry that was on display in the store.

The Senate scheduled three meetings today to debate legislation to abolish capital punishment passed yesterday by the Commons.

A slight resemblance to Canadian actor Dan Aykroyd has landed Brandon’s Sean Bowie a job as the star’s double in “The Arrow,” a CBC-TV miniseries currently being filmed in Winnipeg. Bowie will be a stand-in for Aykroyd while lights are being set and shots are planned.
City council jumped into the Brandon General Hospital fray, supporting a call for a meeting with Premier Gary Filmon and Health Minister Jim McCrae to discuss community concerns about the facility.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Deloraine residents are so happy to find a potential young doctor for their town, they put him in a parade. Nolan Brackenreed toured the town from a seat aboard a float in the Deloraine Fair parade yesterday, as some of his future patients greeted him with waves and hellos. Brackenreed’s seat on the float was a proud moment for Be a Medfriend, a group of Deloraine residents formed two years ago to address the town’s doctor shortage.
TEN YEARS AGO
Virden will host the 2018 Power Smart Manitoba Winter Games. Carly Hayward, co-chair of the Games, said she has known that Virden’s bid to host won in April and it had been difficult to keep it under wraps.
Schools in the Brandon School Division issued just less than half the suspensions this school year compared to last — the biggest single-year drop in more than a decade, a report released this week shows. In total, 146 suspensions were assigned, down from 287, 306 and 327 in previous years. There were fewer suspensions in all but two categories: incidents of cyberbullying went up by one suspension to seven overall, and “assaultive behaviour” rose from 45 to 57.
