FORTY YEARS AGO
Twist king Chubby Checker had members of the audience twisting again during the grand finale at The Classic Rockers Reunion last night in the Keystone Centre. Close to 2,000 fans attended the three-hour concert, which also included The Diamonds, Del Shannon and Bill Haley’s Comets, with Joey Rand being the only surviving original member.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
The search for a missing teenage girl turned into a murder investigation near Rossburn yesterday. A volunteer searcher found the body of 14-year-old Amanda Jane Cook near an abandoned railway track. Cook went missing July 13 while attending the Rossburn Harvest Fest Carnival.
Renegade farmers who carried sacks of barley across the international border were furious when Canada Customs at the International Peace Garden refused to charge them for illegally exporting grain. The protesters said their actions were the same as those of jailed farmer Andy McMechan, who is in Brandon Correctional Institution awaiting trial on charges of shipping grain without a Canadian Wheat Board export licence.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Officially, the transformation of the Brandon Mental Health Centre into the new Assiniboine Community College began at 11 a.m. with an announcement by Premier Gary Doer. Technically, though, work began at 8 a.m. when surveyors showed up to stake out what will be the new north wall of ACC’s culinary arts and hospitality building.
TEN YEARS AGO
As of today, 195 kilometres of Highway 10, from the U.S. border to Riding Mountain National Park, will officially be recognized as the John Bracken Highway in honour of Manitoba’s longest-serving premier.
An airshow in Alberta took a tragic turn on Sunday when a plane crashed and “disintegrated,” killing the pilot. A public affairs officer at Canadian Forces Base Cold Lake said the T-28 Trojan went down during a performance at the show Sunday afternoon. The pilot, Bruce Evans, died in the crash, said Capt. Matthew Strong.
