Charles Philip Montague, one of the last survivors of the Boer War, was buried in Virden this week.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerken were picked as the tourists of the week by the Brandon Chamber of Commerce. The Gerkens were in the 1,000th vehicle to check into the Jaycee tourist info centre, thus winning a night’s stay at the Canadian Inn and a supper.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Many of the 412 students who graduate today from Brandon General Hospital’s school of nursing say their job prospects in the near future look dim.
Provincial health authorities have completed plans for a mass inoculation program this fall against swine flu and now are waiting to see how much vaccine will be available.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Declining mortgage rates have helped fuel an 18 per cent increase in house sales in Brandon over one year, but the average price for a home has also shot up by 15 per cent. A higher demand caused by falling interest rates has pushed up the average price of a house from $55,132 in 1985 to $63,690 in the first six months of this year.
Commonwealth Games officials believe the boycotts over British policy on South Africa have ended and they expect to hold the event with about half of the original 58 participating countries, territories and colonies.

Canada is in the medal race. Cyclist Clara Hughes, a native of Winnipeg, gave Canada its first medal at the Olympics in Atlanta, winning bronze in the women’s road race.
Several dozen riders, most of them from aboriginal communities in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, rode horses from Oak Lake First Nation in the third annual Ride for Diabetes.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
A turkey in every pot and a present under every tree. That’s not what Gladden Smith is promising as he launches his political career, but it might be expected from the man perhaps best known to Brandon residents as the chairman of the Westman and Area Traditional Christmas Dinner for the past 12 years. Smith, 45, has decided to take his community involvement one step further and seek the soon-to-be vacant Meadows seat on Brandon City Council, saying it would be a “privilege” to serve as the representative for the south-end ward.
TEN YEARS AGO
Officials at CFB Shilo took time out of a sunny Thursday to celebrate the first batch of new housing options for soldiers moving on base. Base commander Lt.-Col. John Cochrane was on hand to cut a red ribbon at a two-storey duplex at 58 Frontenac Cres., one of 12 sparkling new residential housing units now ready for moving vans on base. Six of the homes, built by Excel Design and Construction, have three bedrooms — the others have four.
Dozens of homes were destroyed or badly damaged, vehicles crushed or flipped over, sheds ripped to shreds and trees snapped in half on Long Plain First Nation after a tornado tore through the community southwest of Portage la Prairie Wednesday evening. In addition to the powerful winds, the vicious storm brought with it black skies, driving rain, peals of thunder and electrifying flashes of lightning.
