Brandon raised the bar this week as it hosted a record number of athletes at Manitoba’s first Special Olympics event, making the national summer games the biggest yet. The Wheat City showed what western hospitality means as it welcomed more than 1,000 athletes to the 2006 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, said Special Olympics Canada president Deborah Bright, who wouldn’t hesitate to ask the city to host a second time.
TEN YEARS AGO
Though the crowd was quiet, the sun was shining and that’s exactly how the Brandon Folk, Music and Art Festival crowd likes it. The three-day festival kicked off Friday evening with folk and country artist Richard Inman. At 7 p.m., approximately 150 people had already laid claim to their patch of shaded grass, and more music lovers were trickling in behind them as the music started.
An 18-year-old German-Iranian man opened fire in a crowded Munich shopping mall and a nearby McDonald’s Friday night, killing nine people and wounding 16 others before killing himself, the chief of police in the Bavarian capital said.
Canada’s premiers and territorial leaders have agreed in principle on an internal trade deal they say will help create jobs and improve the economy. “This truly is a historic day,” said Yukon Premier Darrell Pasloski, speaking at the end of a two-day premiers meeting in Whitehorse. It’s not clear, however, what will immediately change under the agreement, which will replace an old agreement dating back 23 years.
