Retired veterinarian Ken Warren and his wife Doreen recently donated 62 hectares of bush near Rock Lake to the Manitoba Habitat Heritage Program to ensure it will be preserved for wildlife.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
The province honoured a deceased Sioux Valley elder by announcing it will name a stretch of highway after her. A 10-kilometre section of Highway 21 near Sioux Valley will soon bear the name of Eva McKay, a politically active woman who helped shape Indigenous society in Westman. The announcement came during a massive powwow event at Sioux Valley, which attracted thousands of people from across North America. Heritage Minister Eric Robinson said the province started looking for a way to honour McKay in 2005, shortly after she died at the age of 84.
TEN YEARS AGO
After months of negotiations followed by a mediation process, Brandon emergency 911 dispatchers and the City of Brandon have come to a contract agreement. The proposed agreement, which will be presented to Brandon City Council for approval at a special meeting on Monday, calls for a 16.5 per cent salary increase over six years.
