City council has approved the purchase of a $6,000 steam boiler for the water treatment plant. Elmer Bulloch, district representative for Monarch Life Assurance Co., has been given the national quality award for 1966.

The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has approved an application by Riding Mountain Broadcasting to establish an AM radio station in Brandon. The station will be the second AM radio outlet in the city.

TWENTY YEARS AGO
Three Manitoba men were arrested and a Saskatchewan teen was fighting for his life in hospital yesterday following an assault at the Wasagaming campground. Police were called to the campground in Riding Mountain National Park just after 6 a.m. yesterday. RCMP spokesman Sgt. Steve Saunders said the teenager was injured during a feud between two groups of campers. Three men are in custody but no charges have been laid.
TEN YEARS AGO
While the fields of Minnedosa weren’t yet rockin’ at 4 p.m. Friday, a crowd had started to gather for the annual three-day rock music festival. On Friday, Filthy Lucre, Kenny Shields and Streetheart, and 54-40 took the main stage, with The Junk, Daisy Chain, and The Main Street Exiles playing on the second stage. Tonight’s main stage headliner, Loverboy, seemed to be eagerly anticipated by a large part of the Minnedosa crowd.
Dauphin firefighters were able to rescue an amateur photographer who fell more than 60 metres down an escarpment known locally as “Devil’s Dip” in Riding Mountain National Park. Dauphin Fire Department Chief Cam Abrey said his crews were called shortly after midnight on Thursday. Abrey estimates the woman, who claimed to be out taking photos, fell more than 60 metres from the side of the road.
With the Virden Oilers facing elimination in the South West Baseball League playoffs, they kept their season alive. Des Kopp gave up four earned runs in six-plus innings, while Matt Gunning went 2-for-5 with a home run and six runs batted in as the Oilers pounded the host Oak River Dodgers 12-4 on Friday to tie the best-of-five North Division final 2-2.
