The Kiwanis Club of Brandon-Assiniboine is planning to launch Operation Red Nose in late November. This is a free designated driver service which will be provided through the month of December.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Cyclists ought to have a paved path all the way to one of Brandon’s largest employers to make their daily commutes easier and safer, according to one city councillor. Coun. Don Jessiman (Green Acres) is concerned that employees of Maple Leaf Fresh Foods who commute to work by bicycle have to travel along a difficult and dangerous stretch of Richmond Avenue East. As cars and trucks zip by at high speeds, cyclists are forced to ride on the gravel shoulder for a two-kilometre stretch between the processing plant and 17th Street East.
TEN YEARS AGO
Saskatchewan’s third-largest city was expecting to have alternate sources of water on the weekend to help deal with an oil spill that has tainted the river it usually draws from. Prince Albert shut down its intake from the North Saskatchewan River on Monday to protect its treatment plant and the public after oil from a Husky Energy pipeline breach upstream reached the city.
With momentum still high from the historic Democratic convention, Hillary Clinton used her rally Friday to stress the “stark choice” voters will face between her and Republican rival Donald Trump when they vote in exactly 101 days. The anti-Trump message was a striking reminder of Clinton’s own vulnerabilities, as polls show that a majority of Americans say they question her honesty. Rather than ask Americans to trust her, she implored them to rally against Trump, who she cast as dangerous and unfit to lead the country.
